June 20, 2018 – Summit Medical Group is proud to announce that Dr. Jill Gora, Family Health and Urgent Care Specialist, is a finalist as “Volunteer of the Year” in the NJBIZ Health Care Heroes Awards, which honors exceptional individuals and organizations making an impact on the condition of health care in New Jersey.
With over 22 years of expertise, Dr. Gora has been traveling the globe with Operation Smile to treat children whose families are not able to afford reconstructive surgery. She has completed close to 20 missions around the world to date.
Millions of children in the developing world who suffer from cleft lip and palate lack access to safe and well-timed surgery. As a result, 1 in 10 children born with a cleft die before their first birthday. Those that survive face a life of isolation and ridicule.
Dr. Gora’s work provides hundreds of children a new chance at life. In as little as 45 minutes, children with cleft lip and palate are given new smiles by Dr. Gora and the Operation Smile mission team. The transformation in these children is immediate and deeply moving for Dr. Gora, who is always inspired by the personal stories of the children and families she cares for on her missions.
“Changing a child’s face changes the entire family, and the people in their village, too", says Dr. Gora. Many children she treats have never seen a physician, are seriously malnourished, and suffer from chronic infections. Dr. Gora works with the children and their parents to teach feeding techniques, proper nutrition, and strategies to maximize normal growth and development.
A strong believer in developing healthy habits for the whole family, Dr. Gora has lectured extensively on topics of nutrition, stress reduction and the positive impact of pets on our health.
Dr. Gora, who was a medical student when she went on her first mission in 1996, is a family medicine physician at Summit Medical Group’s Bridgewater office and other locations. She is also the Regional Lead Physician for the Morristown area. She is the recipient of the Operation Smile Excellence in Pediatrics Award.
Nominations for NJBIZ Healthcare Heroes are evaluated by a panel of independent judges, with one winner chosen for each category. Winners were announced at an awards ceremony Tuesday, June 19 at the Palace in Somerset Park.
