Summit Medical Group pediatrician and adolescent medicine specialist, Dr. David Levine, shared his personal journey through postpartum depression with NBC’s Al Roker, Keir Simmons and Jacob Soboroff for the viewers of Megyn Kelly TODAY. Dr. Levine was joined on panel by psychiatrist, Dr. Catherine Birndorf and Assistant Professor of Pediatrics at Indiana University School of Medicine, Erica Cheng, who authored a new study that shows new fathers may be just as likely as new mothers to develop postpartum depression. According to the study, 4.4% of fathers screened in a large, population-based cohort study screened positive for depression – similar to the percentage of mothers who screened positive (5%). Results of the study were published online in JAMA Pediatrics. This finding, if duplicated in larger studies, could change how pediatricians approach screening parents for depression, both before and after birth.
By sharing his story, Dr. Levine hopes to fight the stigma associated with postpartum depression in men and encourage those who are suffering in silence to seek help.
