Melissa Berlin, MD is a member of Summit Medical Group's Family Medicine team. Prior to joining Summit Medical Group (SMG), she had an established practice in Paramus, NJ and is currently proud to be part of SMG’s well-established practice in Glen Ridge, NJ with Dr. Michele Nitti and Dr. Jose Flores. As a board-certified family physician, Dr. Berlin practices general primary care and is experienced in the examination, diagnosis and treatment of a variety of conditions in patients of all ages.
While pursuing her Bachelor of Science degree at McGill University in Montreal, she developed an interest in auditory perception and language acquisition and started studying American Sign Language. She then worked as a summer research assistant for the National Technical Institute for the Deaf in Rochester, N.Y. She was awarded a Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada Student Research Award to conduct research in McGill’s Auditory Perception Laboratory. She also volunteered at the Mackay Center for Deaf and Disabled Children and at the Allan Memorial Psychiatric Hospital, both in Montreal.
After finishing medical school in her hometown of Ottawa, Ontario, Canada, Dr. Berlin completed her Family Medicine Residency at Montefiore Medical Center, where she served as Chief Resident. She also received several awards during that time, including a psychosocial award from the faculty of the Montefiore Social Medicine Residency Program; the Best Resident Teacher Award from third- and fourth-year residents at the Albert Einstein College of Medicine; and a top 10 best poster presentation of her research at the Northeast Region Society Meeting for the Society for Teachers in Family Medicine.
When she is not seeing patients, she enjoys spending time with her four young children and her husband, who is a practicing Neurologist in Bergen County. Her hobbies include dancing, group fitness, and traveling to her home country of Canada where most of her extended family still resides.
