Nirmala Akkapeddi, MD, specializes in preventive medicine, cardiac care, and women’s health. Dr. Akkapeddi has more than 30 years’ experience in internal medicine and primary care. Her expertise includes preventive cardiac care, women’s cardiac health, and nuclear medicine. She has particular interest in weight loss management, healthy lifestyle, fitness, patient education, sharing her knowledge with medical residents and expanding her knowledge by attending medical conferences, seminars, and review courses.
In addition to her position at Summit Medical Group, Dr. Akkapeddi is an attending physician at Morristown Medical Center. She also teaches residents at Morristown Medical Center and she has been a preceptor for medical students from Mount Sinai Medical Center.
Dr. Akkapeddi says, “My experience with family members who experienced preventable illnesses inspired me to become a doctor.” She adds, “I listen carefully to my patients concerns to help develop effective treatment plans that meet their unique needs. Because I believe strongly in preventive measures to help maintain health, I encourage my patients to have annual physical exams and to follow up as recommended if they are taking medication for their chronic medical conditions such as diabetes and hypertension.
Dr. Akkapeddi is a member of the American College of Physicians. Morris County Medical Society and American Association of Physicians of Indian Origin. She is a recipient of the MDx Medical, Inc, Patient’s Choice Award and Compassionate Doctor Recognition. She has been featured in Castle Connolly’s “America’s Top Physicians” and the Consumer Research Council of America.
When she is not working with her patients, Dr. Akkapeddi enjoys running and hiking. An avid runner, Dr. Akkapeddi placed 84th out of over 7,000 women at the More Magazine/Fitness Magazine Women's Half Marathon in Central Park in 2015.
